K-12 Segment Leader / Project Executive, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture
Josh Czerniak is a collaborative, results-driven project leader with a relationship-focused approach to design. Throughout his over 20-year career, nearly all of Josh’s work has focused on buildings for the public with a primary focus on PK-12. In the ever-evolving world of learning environments, Josh finds inspiration through creating spaces that place a high importance on flexibility and student outcomes. He guides stakeholders to challenge preconceived notions of what education spaces can achieve to elevate them to support all students, educators, staff, and the various pedagogies of 21st-Century learning environments. Josh has a passion for school-readiness programs and has led several early childhood education projects for both school districts and park districts. Josh earned his Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree from the prestigious Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
Haley Grau
Executive Director, Middle Tyger Community Center
Haley Grau is the Executive Director for Middle Tyger Community Center (MTCC) in Lyman, SC. MTCC is an innovative and comprehensive family resource center that serves Spartanburg School District 5 and the greater community. Ms. Grau has been serving with MTCC since 2019 and MTCC will celebrate 25 years of service to the community in August 2023. Ms. Grau has a BA in Nonprofit Administration from USC Upstate and a Masters of Divinity from Gardner-Webb University. During her tenure the organization has experienced a significant growth in grants awarded and revenue received. Under her leadership, the organization will grow two campuses within the next fiscal year and continue to meet the changing needs of the surrounding communities.
Michelle Smyth, AIA, LEED AP
Principal, Architect, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture
Michelle is a dynamic, enthusiastic project manager and architect who has completed a variety of project types for nearly 20 years. Michelle’s work includes new design projects for schools and community centers as well as some historic renovation work in Downtown Charleston. Michelle has served eight years on the City of Charleston’s Design Review Board and possesses a unique understanding and sympathy to site and context. Michelle is a recent graduate of the Leadership Class of 2019 for the Greater Summerville / Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and is a current member of Leadership South Carolina. Since joining McMillan Pazdan Smith, Michelle has been focused on projects in the K-12 Studio and has recently led teams for the design of two new high schools in the Lowcountry.
Barbara Manoski
Executive Director, Spartanburg County First Steps
Barbara Manoski is the Executive Director of Spartanburg County First Steps and the founding Director of Spartanburg Quality Counts. Spartanburg County First Steps mission is to help all young children in our county arrive at school ready to learn and prepared for success. Barbara has a Master of Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina and a BA in Psychology from Catawba College, Salisbury, North Carolina. Barbara has been in the early childhood field for more than 35 years as a teacher, center director, coach, and trainer. She currently serves on the USC Upstate College of Education, Human Performance, and Health Advisory Board, the Children’s Museum of the Upstate Board, and the Partner Advisory Council for The Franklin School. Formerly, Barbara was an adjunct professor for the Child Development and Family Studies program at USC Upstate and served on the SC BUILD Initiative team.
